Tsume So, a few months back (at least as far back as Sept) I volunteered my work desk to be home for a plant under the false pretense that it would leave my desk to travel with it's owner...who was job hunting. When the landed the job, they sorta... Told me it was mine now. It was always mine and no takebacksies. So now this Monstera hangs out with me 5 days a week. See first photo of it and a current photo from today.
klaaaang Oh no! I'm not sure those are really the most ideal desk plant. We used to have one in our garden when I was small, and I used to used it as a 'cave' to go exploring in.
Tsume klaaaang I have a pretty decently large u shaped desk. I moved my coffee maker and added a plant. And I can't take it home...my sweet dumbasses from the Pets! Thread would probably destroy it. 😅 (And I don't think the plant is pet safe?) I now desire to have my desk be a small jungle...
electricbudgie I have a coworker who has a small desk jungle and was begging us to take cuttings last week. I now have a second pothos start and a few starts of small-leafed spiderwort! We have started calling that coworker Plant Santa. We love Plant Santa.
Tsume I'm not a plant parent...well...I thought.i literally had a dream about filling my house with plants so I guess this woke something in me? XD But also "oh no I don't know what I'm doing. Now I gotta research."
Tsume So... I turned into a bit of a plant mom, I guess? The monstera above also turned into a couple of other plants I was gifted and one I propagated all on my own? I'm just scared to death to start repots of these suckers... So I was given an African Violet to watch over and she's gotten so big and happy. You can see how much she's grown in the handful of months I've had her. And I was given a pothos as well and that has really taken off! (I also read a thing about pothos cuttings having a magic reaction to make other plants grow roots faster...and I think there might be some merit in that...) The reason I bring up the pothos cutting thing is because of the next one. A prior coworker brought in a wandering Jew plant... Apparently they can also be called inch plants (as I have learned today. Thank you Seek). A piece fell off in the floor and a coworker picked it up...grew it into a monster and snipped off a couple strands to encourage even growth. I got two and another friend got two... And they grew. And grew. Mine weren't making roots well until I (accidentally) snapped a leaf off the pothos. Popped that in the water with my clippings and they grew a lot of roots within a couple days! The first one is the plant my coworker grew from a piece that fell in the floor. The last two (full plant shots) are mine and taken 4 days apart. And the very very last one is just. A shot of the little sprigs coming off of the long stem.
Tsume Oh yeah... Monstera baby is doing the tall. XD it was already very large and in charge... But it's still going too! You can really see how much it has also grown since the first photo I posted of it here.
Dr Glowcat Apples help other fruit ripen because they release a ripening hormone that is compatible with many other fruits. Maybe pothos cuttings do the same with rooting hormones? I didn't know about the phenomenon and never tried, but I observed that all plants in the aroid family root incredibly easily. I have never had a cutting fail to root, so it seems to me that they have no difficulty in producing the hormone. Anyway, your office is well on its way to becoming a jungle and I love it <3
Tsume Dr Glowcat I will say the clipping I had from the pothos did actually fail. Best I can figure is, even though I had a little node, it broke just wrong and damaged it. The leaf never grew roots in water or dirt. (Granted, it never died either) The vine-y part it came off continues ever onward. I gave up this weekend. It's been months... But it DID help the other plants so I'm still pleased. I'll just try again sometime. Holy crow that other one is long and I'm happy for you!
Dr Glowcat My phylodendron micans was grown from a single leaf and now has reached the floor :3 I actually couldn't take a pic that included the whole of it.
Tsume Thought I'd update the photos of some of these. This really shows some of the height on the monstera and the just... CONSTANT growth of the African Violet. The Pothos isn't a slacker either. New leaves and growth weekly! 🥰🌱🌿
