I agree with this so much it hurts. This is something I've also been mulling over a lot. Not only would it help detach us from The Powers that Be and keep us more resilient. it also would be so much healthier for our brains to find and curate our own stuff. This relates back to a youtube video I watched (from this genuinely super cool channel where I have learned SO MUCH about appliances and electronics) and I highly suggest watching it if you have 40 minutes to spare (linked below).
I've seen how video game preservationists have done stuff like recreating the old Nintendo Network so your online 3DS/Wii/Wii U games can still work. Enthusiasts can take yesterdays hardware and keep it relevant today. We DON'T EVEN NEED NEW FANCY STUFF. There are SO many things that nerds on the internet can do to resist these centralized platforms and build our own little homes out there.
Maybe I'm old, but man, the internet was so much more FUN when you kept running across all of these little different communities and places for all sorts of different things. It was fun just to go LOOKING for that kind of stuff!

Like a lot of the toxicity I see on modern social media comes from people who assume they don't need to curate their own experience. It's where we get folks trying to ban everything they don't like instead of just not following stuff they don't enjoy.
